Heesen Yachts has announced that on February 28 2014 the hull and superstructure of the first ever 55m steel Fast Displacement motor yacht were joined together at the Heesen facility in Oss. YN 17255 was sold in February 2013 thanks to a beneficial collaboration with a commercial family office “Bilderlings Wealth” which represents the client and manages the project. YN 17255, whose revolutionary Fast Displacement Hull Form was developed by Van Oossanen Naval Architects in collaboration with Heesen Yachts in house naval architects, will reach the remarkable top speed of 16,5 knots, with a range of 4.500Nm at a cruising speed of 13 knots. Perry van Oossanen comments: "This 55m marks the 10th Heesen for which Van Oossanen Naval Architects have provided the naval architecture…
The recent launch of the 46.22-metre Feadship Como again drew attention to Feadship’s pioneering use of glass. The client requested unprecedentedly large windows in the hull and a wealth of glass in her superstructure. Like every custom project at Feadship, Como’s owner’s requirements were met in style. And following on from other recent launches that have highlighted the art of glass such as Hampshire II, Musashi and Venus, thoughts now turn to the next logical – but seriously complex – innovation, namely using glass structures to also support structural loads from the decks above. The advance of technology in the use of glass is radically changing the look of superyachts in the same way that it transformed land-based architecture. Today glass determines the look of…

Photo by Dutch superyacht builder Amels has launched the latest superyacht in their Amels Limited Editions 180 series, hul 466, just weeks after the launch of hull 465 and the 65 metre Z. With the Limited Editions concept, designed by Tim Heywood, Amels has successfully bridged the gap between semi-custom and full custom superyachts, setting a course to further develop this segment of the industry. Apart from the three brand new superyachts now docked outside the yard, Amels also welcomed superyacht Imagine, the first Limited Editions 212 to the yard, for a refit. Amels has not yet released any information on their latest launches and refits.
The captain of superyacht Penny Mae tells us that the yacht has recently been audited and has received her MLC 2006 Certificate, and in doing so has become the first Marshall Islands flagged yacht under 500 ton to become certified. Captain Mike O'Neill says: "All commercial ships and charter yachts are now required to comply to the MLC2006 standards but only vessels over 500 ton are required to be certified. However Penny Mae elected to take the extra step to become certified, which not only reinforces our proactive outlook towards safety, security & wellbeing of guests & crew, but will also help to streamline the process when undergoing port state control inspections". The Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) is an International Labour Organization convention established in 2006…

Motor Yacht Equinox is a concept design born from a conversation between yacht Designer Andrew Trujillo and Naval Architect & Designer Adam Younger. Adam Younger is very well established as a designer of seriously fast vessels of all sizes, so project Equinox (as we decided to call her) hoped to combine Andrew’s experience in designing luxury super-yachts (interior design and exterior styling) with Adam’s knowledge and know how. Andrew Trujillo says: “Some months back, Adam and I were talking about the possibility of collaborating on a conceptual project. Our conversation led us into discussing the fact that many motor catamarans tend to be practical yet often lack visual excitement. So we decided to design a 45M fast catamaran that was exciting both in terms of performance…
